If the beginner's plan is too easy for you, jump up to the intermediate. It's always important to be challenged. If the intermediate is too challenging, then just add some time and speed to your beginner's program.
The most important equipment you need for running is a great pair of shoes. I've seen so many people, including myself, try to get a cheap pair right off the bat because they aren't pro runners. They think they can get away with discount no name shoes. The general conclusion is lots of aches and pains as well as frustration. Many people think they aren't made to be runners because they have a bad experience in a bad pair of shoes. They give up on something that could be really great just to save a few bucks.
We all have different types of feet and we all have different gaits. There are specific shoes made for each type of foot. Shoes should not be chosen because of looks or style, they should be chosen to fit your needs. Here is an excellent article on selecting the right pair of shoes.
I have run in both good and bad shoes and I can tell you first hand that it makes a huge difference. My favorite store to get shoes is Road Runner Sports in Scottsdale, AZ. The reason being is because of it's close proximity to me and their extensive testing to find the right type of shoe. Their Shoe Dog program is phenomenal and I recommend it fully. If there isn't a Road Runner near you then look for a shoe store (not in the mall) that specializes in running.
Good luck and Get some good shoes!
